the leather interior (as well as the carpet and all trim pieces) really is as perfect as it looks.

after finding this '01.5 cummins powered 4x4 dually (6 speed manual, HO cummins) for $15,000 i hopped a plane to denver and drove it home. its not as perfect as it appears to be in pictures, but its as close as ive yet to find to being the truck that i have been looking for. although we had agreed on $15,000 over the phone, after seeing the truck for myself and finding some problems that werent listed in the ad we agreed on $14,500 so i wrote the check and drove it 9 hours home back to billings. the truck rides great, but there are issues that i have to correct.
  • 4.10 gears. although this truck will pull anything i could ever want to pull with it, the 4.10 gears arent very streetable. driving in the city im in 5th gear to travel 35 mph, and driving on the highway in 6th gear im taching 2500 rpm just to run the speed limit. perhaps this engine was designed to handle this just fine, but im not. i just dont much care for turning my diesels over 2000 rpm, and have to resolve this (besides...running straight pipe stacks gets way too loud over 2000 rpm!). i am considering adding a gear vendors over-drive unit, but have not seen one in years. where is the best place to find one, and what can i expect to pay? i would like to have the overall ratio similar to my green '01.5 with the 3.54 gears (it has an automatic, though). i have also considered having the overall drive ratio comparable to a 3.73 gear, but im unsure of the existing ratio on my 6 speed manual. your feedback on this would be appreciated. just last month i bought THIS '01.5 3500 that is also the 6 speed HO cummins. im not certain of its gearing but its very streetable. another option i suppose is that i could just swap front/rear complete axle assemblies and have the 4.10s on the flatbed truck. this isnt my preferred option but it is an option. i just really dont like the 4.10 gears on the highway, even with the 6 speed tranny.
  • the front drive is non-operable. when i engage the shifter i dont appear to get any response at all from the front drive. i get no dash lights, and the drive definately does not engage (turned short on pavement with no resistance at all). nothing appears to be out of place, so im hoping somebody can give me a good starting point. im a dumb-ass, and never even thought to check the front drive before buying the truck. i still would have bought it (the interior is just perfect and the outside isnt too bad either!) but i would have negotiated a little harder on price.
  • the injectors may need to be changed. for now injector cleaner seems to have helped, but im at least preparing myself to have to change them. how difficult is this on the 24 valve cummins 5.9? my local dealership today said they need to be "flushed", at a cost of $125 but does the dealership do anything more than run the same type of cleaner through them?
  • passenger side front axle is leaking oil pretty bad. this is something i cannot put off fixing. how big of a job is it to change this seal? dealer wants $325 out the door.
  • the truck came with an exhaust brake, but i do not know what type it is. the red handle mounted on the shifter (shown above) is for the exhaust brake. when you pull the exhaust brake it engages, even if you are trying to accelerate. on my automatic i can turn the exhaust brake on and it automatically engages only when i disengage the throttle, but thats not how this one works. i would prefer to not have to turn it on and off by hand every time i want to engage it. im not opposed to removing it and replacing it with another type if i have to. recommendations? im running a banks exhaust brake on SMOKE-DOG but smoke-dog has an automatic with the automatic controller.
  • radio has controls on the steering wheel. is there a way to make these controls work with an aftermarket stereo?
  • the a/c works great, but it only blows out of the defroster. is there a common failure point on these?
all in all im very very pleased with this truck overall. i took it today to have the front windows tinted and i picked up a set of husky liners to keep my carpet nice. as happy as i am with this truck, i can see already its gonna be a money pit. i can certainly foresee a set of black stainless stacks (just like with smoke-dog) and a juice with attitude in the near future.

Nate, my 05 2500 had the 3.73 gears and the G56 6 speed. around 30 mph i was in 5th also.

if you truely want the overall gearing of 3.73, witch would do anything you want, then why not just regear the axles and be done? its gotta be cheaper and stronger than the gear vendors.

as far as the exhaust brake, i'd see if Jacobs sells a brake to fit the truck.

Its been a while since i had a front axle apart on the dodge trucks but if i recall correctly, its not that big of a deal. grab yourself a chiltons manual and have a look.

Yeah the 6 speeds are geared lower over all than the Auto's.

My 6 speed with 3.73 turns more RPM's than my dads auto with 4.10's. The 3.55's I had in my '95 were great... best mileage... Never had power problems.

Great buy... Are you starting up you're own dealership? You now have 4 correct?

With the A/C stuck on defrost and the front axle not engaging I'd suspect a vacuum problem. I'd start troubleshooting at the vacuum pump mounted on the back of the power steering pump. The pump might be shot or you just might have a vacuum leak somewhere. Note- the power brakes will still work with a bad vacuum pump because the brake booster runs on hydraulic pressure from the power steering system.

I'd let someone else do the front axle seal. It's not impossible to do at home but it's not as simple as the rear axle. The seal is pretty far inside the axle tube and not very easy to get at. And if they goon up the seal putting the axle back in it's up to them to fix it again.

Gearing info:
NV5600 6-speed 3.54 vs 4.10 RPM/MPH chart:
http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/specs/axle/6sp.htm

If a different rear end gear isn't what you want, 2-speed auxiliary transmissions are cool. It mounts between the transmission and transfer case so it can be used in 4WD without any issues. You get a 20% overdrive that you can select for each gear, but you don't have to split each gear if you don't want to. It's like having a 12-speed transmission for when you are loaded or a 6 or 7-speed when you aren't.
2-speed auxiliary transmission:
http://www.usgear.com/dual_range.htm

If you want I can write up an excel sheet that shows you a speed/rpm chart for any combination of transmission gears, rear end gears, and tire sizes. I can write the 2-speed auxiliary transmission in also. Just input the gears and tire size and it'll figure it all out for you.

Aftermarket radios will work with the steering wheel controls but you have to get a radio with a remote control. I can't remember who makes it but there is an interface that hooks up to the steering wheel controls that operates the radio's remote. You just have to mount the remote in the truck somewhere so the radio can see it.
I have the same stereo system as you. If you replace the factory front door speakers I'll buy the old ones from you. I have a bad one and replacements from the dealer are outrageously priced.

Why do you think the injectors are bad? Is it a high mileage truck? The clutch peddle isn't even worn out yet.

i reconnected this vacuum line and my vents as well as my front drive started working properly!

...the dealer where i purchased this truck had the lift pump replaced the day before i picked it up (the old one was working but it leaked fuel really bad). i guess during that swap they pulled the vacuum line apart.

now i can move forward toward resolving the low gear ratio.
