has anyone tried building there own jake brake? if so how did it work? i would like to have one but im not going to spend a lot of money on one.

Bunk correct if wrong. A Jake Brake actually "kills" 2 or 4 cylinders, I'm not sure how you could build your own. A exhaust break restrict the exhaust, in theory it would be easier to fab...

One of the buses that I drove in Hawaii had an engine brake that you could select 2 or 4 cylinders. That's probably the kind you are talking about. It didn't have any effect on the power output of the engine and since all of the roads in Hawaii either go straight up or straight down I left it on "4" all the time. I'm not sure exactly how that one worked but it was dead silent.

I think building an engine brake of any type is beyond the capability of most home mechanics. It's certainly something that I couldn't do.

I would just stick with the manufactured stuff but if you end up building one and it works wow major kudos
